Lots of news about Warhammer 40000 has been revealed by Games Workshop during yesterday’s online preview. As usual, the preview took place on Twitch, in the presence of several leading figures including Citadel Studio manager Pete Foley.
Many news for gamers and collecters has been presented, let’s try to summarize them here in brief.
News about Warhammer 40000: the ninth edition
Probably the most important news for players is the release of the ninth edition of the game. A few years after the release of the eighth edition, which had not impressed the most veteran players, an update arrives that promises very well according to Pete Foley:
“I really can’t wait for the new edition of Warhammer 40,000 to get into our hobbyists’ hands. We’ve been working on this for such a long time, listening to what the community wants, and doesn’t want, from the game and the galaxy. With all that information and a few exciting new developments, I believe we’ve made the game better than it’s ever been.
The new edition works seamlessly with all existing codexes and Psychic Awakening books, which is particularly important as we still have three more Psychic Awakening books to go! They were all written with the new rules in mind, so you can explore these dark new events knowing all your existing rules will work when the new edition finally arrives.”
The return of the Chainsword!
With the introduction of the Primaris, one of the most fascinating and “violent” characteristics of the Space Marines has been lost: the legendary chainsword! With yesterday’s presentation, images of the first miniatures of the Space Marines equipped with the chainsword were shown. Certainly a return more than ever welcome!
New Necron warriors
The news about Warhammer 40000 continues with Necrons. The new miniatures of the Necron warriors has been shown, one of the most appreciated factions of Warhammer 40000, thanks also to their resuscitation protocol … This new version has a decidedly more “horror” look than the previous ones. Everything to see how they will be used.
New narrative: Dawn of fire
The universe of Warhammer 40000 is driven by the books of the Black Library. With Psychic Awakening, a whole new storyline has been created, opening new compelling plots for each faction. Dawn of Fire will be a new series full of new stories. The interesting thing is that these new events will introduce narrative threads that I combine canned sets, campaign books and codexes. Dawn of Fire combines the narrative powers of the Citadel studio and the Black Library to create a unified narrative.
The first book will be Avenging Son, written by Guy Haley, a veteran in this field already with Horus Heresy and Siege of Terra.
New mobile app for Warhammer 40000 players
Together with the ninth edition of Warhammer 40000, the new game app that collects the rules and statistics for each model will be made available on stores for smartphones and tablets. There are no dates yet, but what is known is that for those who will buy the new paper codex of the ninth edition, the digital version will also be made available for free.
The app will in fact allow players to be able to travel lighter on the road to their favorite gaming location, while providing everything they need to know about their models and the rules to be used for each game.
The new Warhammer 40000 website
warhammer40000.com has a new look, and I must say that from a technical point of view the site is really well done. It is the starting point for every budding player and also provides a newsletter to stay updated on all the news.
New Warhammer 40000 logo
The new thing that most attracted me however, is the new Warhammer 40000 logo. I still feel mixed emotions in seeing it, on the one hand I think that the news is often difficult to digest in the first instance, which takes a little time. Yet I can’t understand … there is something wrong with this new logo, or I am missing a little information. A logo must be representative and immediately recall the emotions, the stories, the characters it represents. What does this logo have to do with the dark and gothic settings of the game? Where is the darkness and violence that characterize the galaxy represented?
At first it reminds me more of the Star Wars empire than anything related to Warhammer … will it be for those red lasers? I don’t know, I’ll just have to get used to it maybe, or maybe there will be other presentations that will bring the logo to represent the game more. I believe that more than a new logo, a restyle of the old one would have been enough.
And what do you think of all these news? What about the logo? Let me know in a comment.
