The Army Painter is about to release the new Speedpaint Mega Set, a color collection for speed painting consisting of 23 colors plus medium. I got to preview them (they are currently on pre-order), so I decided to test them on a zombie from the Zombicide Green Horde board game.
Speedpaint Mega Set: what’s inside and considerations
As mentioned, this Mega Set offers 23 colors plus a medium, so you have everything you need to paint any type of miniature, without worrying about having the right color available. As reported on the box, this is a product that aims to help players cut down on painting time in order to have more to play. Whether you are a fan of wargames like Warhammer, or board games like Zombicide, the important thing is that you are not interested in painting to use these colors.
In my humble opinion the result obtained from these colors, if exploited in this way, as well as for all the colors of this type also from other brands, is acceptable for a Warhammer player. By this I mean a wargame enthusiast who wants to respect the rule of three colors often present in tournaments, but it is certainly not by using them in this way that you get miniatures with high artistic quality.
On the other hand, if you are passionate about painting, these colors can come in handy for certain effects. They have great potential especially when used as an airbrush. A test that I can’t wait to do and which we will talk about in the coming weeks.
How much does the Mega Set cost? And when will it be available?
The Army Painter Speedpaint Mega Set is currently on pre-order and will be available from March 26, 2022. At a cost of € 89 including a brush, it can be safely said that compared to Contrast they have a much lower price. In fact, a Contrast color is even more than € 6, while with the Mega Set the single bottle of color is € 3.70. And you get a synthetic brush as a gift.
Ok, but the quality? In my opinion, the quality when compared to Citadel’s Contrasts is no less. From what I have been able to see, even online, they do not have identical shades but the yield is very similar. For these reasons it is therefore advisable not to change brands if you plan to paint miniatures of the same army thinking that “blue” is the same blue for Citadel and The Army Painter. This is absolutely not the case. They are close, but not the same.
